🚔 UK Law Regarding Tinted Windows
🔹 Front Windscreens & Front Side Windows
Legal tinting limits are based on the date your vehicle was first registered:
-
Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985:
-
Front windscreen must allow at least 75% of light through
-
Front side windows must allow at least 70% of light through
-
-
Vehicles first used before 1 April 1985:

Both front windscreen and front side windows must allow at least 70% of light through
-
✅ No restrictions apply to tinting the rear windscreen or rear passenger windows
❗ Penalties for Illegal Window Tints
If your vehicle’s tints exceed legal limits, you may receive:
-
A Prohibition Notice — stopping you from driving the vehicle until the tints are removed
-
A Penalty Notice or Court Summons
The police or DVSA inspectors use specialist equipment to measure visible light transmission (VLT).
If you're unsure about what's legal, we're happy to offer advice and help you choose a compliant, stylish tint for your vehicle.
